Face key to payment at KPRO by KFC restaurant

Technology ranging from mobile ordering to facial recognition for payments is included in a new concept restaurant, KPRO by KFC in Hangzhou.

Introduced by restaurant group Yum China Holdings, the outlet is aimed at tech-savvy young people and urban professionals.

“KPRO offers a creative, modern and seasonal menu with a wide range of dishes freshly made to order,” says Yum China president/COO Joey Wat.

Its menu offers salads, panini and roasted chicken, freshly squeezed fruit juice, gourmet coffee, craft beer and Cremia ice cream. The store is designed with a welcoming “greenhouse” layout and an open kitchen.

A key feature is the integration of Alipay’s new “Smile to Pay” facial-recognition payment technology. It uses a multi-step authentication process, including a facial scan and mobile phone number, to verify the identity of customers and enable payment. It is the first commercial use of the payment technology globally.

“Smile to Pay will bring another level of convenience for customers,” says Ant Financial director of biometric identification technology Jidong Chen.

Other cutting-edge technology is used throughout the restaurant to offer customers a convenient and connected in-restaurant experience. With no traditional ordering counter, customers can avoid queues by ordering at digital kiosks or using their mobile phones to scan QR codes and order at their tables.
